Rarity and Value: This denomination was only printed from 1875 until 1878. That is a very short period of time. It is no surprise that these are usually at least scarce and sometimes quite rare. One dollar was not a tremendous amount of money, so it was possible for these to be saved as curiosity items. Prices start at around $400 and go up quickly from there. Current Market Analysis: The market for better North Carolina national bank notes has traditionally been strong. It was stronger five years ago compared to today. However, it is a better state than most in terms of demand and number of collectors. North Carolina already had a robust economy during the first charter period (prior to 1882) so you can find early notes from major cities like Charlotte, Winston Salem, Raleigh, etc. The most prized notes from the state are going to be from the tiny communities that issued during the early 20th century. A couple of towns that come to mind are Hamlet and Murphy. Notes with color like 1882 brown backs and 1902 red seals are not necessarily rare, but they are much more popular than blue seals or small size notes.
