Rarity and Value: A portrait of John Jay is on the front of each third charter national bank note. 1902 $100 red seals are very rare as a type. Only around 125 are known to exist. Even notes from large banks in heavily circulated condition should still be worth around $4,000. That price can get much higher if the note is from a rare bank, rare state, or is in high grade. Current Market Analysis: We personally love notes from Mississippi. However, most other collectors don’t feel the same way. In the 1980s Mississippi notes were highly prized for their rarity. Today there just isn’t a lot of demand, despite still being rare. Part of the problem is condition. Mississippi has always been a poor state. Paper money changed hands frequently and today it is usually found in very heavily circulated condition. Many notes are stamp signed, which is also less desirable. One of the last great anticipated discoveries is that of a first charter from Mississippi. None are currently known to exist. Brown backs and red seals (in high grades) are also rare. The same thing goes for #1 notes. There are not many to go around.
