Rarity and Value: Twenty dollars was a large sum of money before 1890, which is when most of these were issued. Only a half dozen are currently known to exist. That total accounts for all territorial banks in the country. Needless to say, these are rare and valuable. The exact value is based on two factors; those are the condition and issuing bank. Current Market Analysis: There is a very strong demand for territorial notes from Montana. Those can be first charters and some brown back notes. Montana became a state in 1889. Most territorials have long been discovered and are tightly held with collectors. Third charter notes (red seal and blue seals) seem to be out of favor with collectors right now. We really can’t explain why, but prices were definitely stronger for these notes ten years ago. In years past there has been lots of outside interest in Montana notes from collectors who hunted, skied, or otherwise vacationed there. Most serious collectors never lived in the state. You are going to see lots of notes from larger cities like Billings and Kalispell. Other notes should be assumed to be scarce until proven otherwise.
