Rarity and Value: We once heard a collector refer to these as “rare as hens teeth.” While they may not be quite that rare, nice looking examples really are few and far between. You could buy a lot of things with $20 in the 1860s and 1870s. There was no incentive to hold a $20 bill just because you liked it. If you had one, then you spent it. These are not considered traditional rarities, but they are by all means rare. Contact us for value information. Don’t forget to check the serial number. Number 1 notes always sell for nice premiums.
Current Market Analysis: The most expensive notes from Nebraska were issued while Nebraska was still a territory. Only about ten notes like that are known to exist and they are all in heavily circulated condition. Pricing the other 99.9% of Nebraska notes can be difficult. Lots of notes exist that are not on the collector census. It seems like every five years Nebraska is red hot and then ice cold. Right now we are moving from hot to cold. First charter notes are of course very rare. There is actually a fairly large selection of nice brown backs, red seals, and blue seals. As always, notes from small towns will be worth more than notes from larger cities like Omaha and Lincoln.
