Rarity and Value: John Sherman is pictured on the front of each third charter $50 bill. Right now there are only about 100 1902 $50 red seals known to exist! That means that even generic examples should sell for a few thousand dollars. If you have a note from a rare bank or rare state, that also happens to be in great condition, then the value could easily be in excess of $10,000. Please contact us for exact values. Don’t forget to check the serial number. Number 1 notes always sell for nice premiums.
Current Market Analysis: The market for West Virginia nationals suffers from the fact that most collectors in the state don’t have limitless budgets to work with. Wealthy national bank note collectors who don’t live in West Virginia really have no connection to the state to make them want to collect it. We have had some really rare and beautiful notes from West Virginia that we feel like should have been worth two times more than what we eventually sold the notes for. It is surprising, but lots of high grade and early notes exist from the state. We think the history surrounding the small coal towns that issued many WV notes is especially interesting. Sadly though, we don’t see the market getting stronger any time soon.
